Conference programme

Each day of the conference will begin and end with a keynote presentation from an International expert in a subject related to compassionate caring. Throughout the conference there will be the opportunity to participate in workshops, attend symposiums, round table discussions and poster presentations. Their will also be an opportunity to visit exhibits related to compassionate care. We are keen that your conference experience is stimulating and enjoyable, consequently we request that all presenters utilise engaging and participatory approaches.

Call for abstracts

This call for abstracts invites you to share your work internationally under the following broad themes.

  1. Understanding a need for compassionate caring
  2. Caring in the curriculum
  3. Innovations in practice
  4. Methods, measurement and outcomes
  5. Being a leader in compassionate caring
  6. Strategic, cultural and political dimensions of compassionate care

Call for abstracts:  symposium, workshops, poster presentations, round table discussions. Please do not feel restricted, creative approaches that engage participants, such as debate, drama, use of art and music are actively encouraged.  Completed submissions should be emailed as an attachment to Valerie Miller  by 1st March 2010. Following submission of your abstract, you will receive an email confirming receipt. Following review of the abstracts by the Conference Scientific Committee, you will be contacted by email regarding the outcome of your submission by Friday 26th March 2010.  Successful abstracts will be included in the conference materials

Symposium (90 minutes)

Symposium is a presentation of between three and five papers with a shared focus.  These presentations last for 90 minutes.  A nominated chair will be required to submit the abstract and demonstrate the link between papers.  Each individual abstract should be no more than 300 words.

Workshop (60 minutes)

Workshop sessions are where the workshop leader supports delegates in developing skills and knowledge about a particular way of, for example, working in practice, conducting research and educational activity. This could involve presenting a new approach or technique used in practice. Creative and participatory approaches are encouraged within these sessions. A computer with data projector, flip charts and pens will be provided for each workshop, while any additional materials required will need to be provided by the workshop leader.

Poster presentation (20 minutes)

Posters are visual displays, these will be available to view throughout the conference and will be grouped according to the conference themes.  To maximise opportunities for discussion about your poster, a poster discussion will be timetabled into the programme.  This will require the author to be present at the poster, to talk with delegates and fellow poster presenters.  These timetabled sessions will last 20 minutes. Posters must be a maximum size of A1.

Round table discussion (30 minutes)

This is a more informal approach to oral presentations. Each presenter will be asked to share a summary of their work in 15 minutes around a table with up to 12 delegates (NB no PowerPoint available so be creative).  The presenter will then facilitate questions and discussion for the remaining 15 minutes.

All abstracts are required to follow the presentation checklist identified in the abstract submission form.  The abstract itself should be no more than 300 words. The deadline for online submission of abstracts is 1st March 2010.

Gala event and Award Ceremony

On the evening of Thursday 10 June 2010 the conference will be hosting a Gala Event and Award Ceremony to be held at Edinburgh’s premiere contemporary event venue, The Edinburgh Corn Exchange. The evening will commence with a drinks reception, then a gala meal. Following this, awards will be presented to those who have submitted abstracts and presented posters, round table discussions, symposiums and workshops during the conference. Entertainment and dancing with a particularly Scottish flavour will bring the evening to a close. Prepare to experience a fun filled and particularly Scottish celebration. The Gala event is included in your full conference registration and payment and can be booked separately for those booking the conference on a daily rate.
