Nick Barley, Director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival and Visiting Professor of the EIFET gave an insightful and provocative Professorial Lecture entitled ‘Thinking outside the Tent’ to a packed Lindsay Stewart lecture theatre on Thursday 26 January 2012.
The role of Innovation and Internationalism in festival success was critcally examined and the forces that are likely to shape large literary festivals in the future discussed. The challenges of delivering an authentic festival whilst audiences and journalists increasingly expect to be served up a banquet of superstar celebrity authors were debated. Nicks presentation prompted discussion within the audience on the role of literary festivals into the future.

The programme is for experienced mid to senior level managers who wish to challenge themselves and discover their leadership edge. It is designed to engage them in a move from managing to leading.
They do this by getting a deeper understanding of themselves, their performance and their impact on others. We use leading edge, evidenced based behavioural tools and techniques to develop a full range of well researched successful leader capabilities: authentic, positive, imaginative, adaptable, empathetic, communicating, emotionally intelligent.
Delivered in a series of challenging, experiential, psychologically sophisticated but positive workshops over a year, there are no exams but assessment is continuous on the practical application of relevant new behaviours within the workplace and reflection on how these successfully influence others and add organisational value. We want people on the programme to get results from and be rewarded in their behaviour change quickly. Employers see results within the first few workshops. In fact over 70% of this year’s cohort has been promoted to positions of substantial responsibility during the programme.
Organisations such as Scottish and Southern Energy and Johnson & Johnson see it as a key process for the development of their emerging leaders.

This course is designed for people who have some experience in coaching in organisations, either as a professional coach or as a manager/specialist in an organisation, who want to provide a context and framework to further improve their skills as a coach.
"Embarking upon the Msc in Coaching was a huge decision for me and one that I considered very carefully. I am delighted that I took that decision though, because it has opened doors for me and my coaching practice. Consider the learning, the intellectual stretch, the great people you will meet and learn from as well as the opportunities that this course will bring and then decide."

Following the success of the one year part time BA Business & Enterprise (BABE) degree taught at Craiglockhart, October 2010 saw the launch of the first cohort based 'away from home' in Liverpool. The 11 Merseyside students attend local lectures once a month and only travel to Scotland for their induction and, of course, graduation.
Liverpool based BABE student Deb Bacon said:
"The BABE course is the perfect solution for working people who want or need to obtain their degree, it fits around work as the work based learning element is exactly what it says! The skills learnt so far are really practical and useful to improve working practice. The team are great, very supportive and approachable which is really important for distance learning." Recruitment of students in other locations is ongoing and Jeremy Roebuck recently visited Milton Keynes, Barnstaple, London and Halifax speaking to potential students. He said:
"We're hopeful of starting two or three more England based cohorts in the New Year, probably Halifax, London and somewhere in the South West."
