Biography

Award-winning photographer David Eustace, who has photographed stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Judi Dench and Sophia Loren, was appointed Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University in October 2015. David took over from former Chancellor Tim Waterstone.

Born in Glasgow in 1961, David Eustace served with the Royal Naval Reserve 10 MCM (Mine Counter Measure) Squadron before becoming a prison officer in Barlinnie prison in Glasgow where he worked for seven years.

He first picked up a camera at the age of 28, joining a local camera club shortly after. His career and life then changed course when he was encouraged to apply for the BA Photography, Film and Television programme at Edinburgh Napier in the late 1980s.

After graduating with distinction in 1991, his career took off. He has worked for magazines including Vogue, The Sunday Times, and Elle. Since 1991 he has photographed a host of celebrities, while his fashion, landscape and documentary work is also highly respected.

Chancellor Eustace, who now splits his time between Edinburgh and New York has moved into directing commercials, including for Scottish Television and The Scottish Executive Anti Drugs Campaign.

He is successful within the commercial arena and respected within a gallery environment, with work in the collections of The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery in London.

He has also had a major exhibition in a London Cork Street Gallery, which was the subject of a BBC documentary, as well as work exhibited at the RSA in Edinburgh. His selected works were exhibited in The Scottish Gallery in February 2015.
