THE legendary designer behind the most recognised logo in the world is to deliver a rare public lecture to an Edinburgh audience.

Milton Glaser, whose heart-centred I Love New York logo has been popular with visitors to the Big Apple since the seventies, has been invited to deliver the inaugural Chancellor’s Talk at Edinburgh Napier University.

Design genius Glaser, whose work also includes the famous psychedelic Bob Dylan poster and the Brooklyn Brewery logo, will address an audience at the University’s Craiglockhart campus via a Skype link on Wednesday March 9.

Speaking from his native New York City, the 86-year-old will speak about a career which has seen him co-found New York magazine and host prestigious one-man shows on his way to becoming one of the most celebrated graphic designers in the USA.

Glaser - who has been selected for a series of lifetime achievement awards and received the National Medal of the Arts award in 2009 - will also answer questions from the Edinburgh audience.

Fans of the designer who cannot get to the exclusive Craiglockhart event will still have the chance to put questions to him through Twitter.

Glaser is the first high-profile figure lined up to appear at what will be a series of Chancellor’s Talks at Edinburgh Napier. The events are the brainchild of the University’s new Chancellor, David Eustace, who first attended Edinburgh Napier in his late twenties and used his degree as a platform to build a career as an award winning-photographer.

Dr Eustace, who will welcome guests to the event on the night, said: “The words ‘legend’ and ‘genius’ are often thrown around ten a penny these days, and used as hype for someone or something that in all reality is little more than the ordinary.

“Milton Glaser encapsulates and deserves both titles, not as some given right or spin but with respect, as someone who has witnessed and created much and offered more.

“He, for me, encompasses all my hopes for uniting, respecting and learning from one another in the worlds of art, commerce and education.”

Glaser’s lecture will be delivered by Skype to the Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre at Craiglockhart on Wednesday 9th March at 6.30pm. Initial demand has led to places now being reserved at the nearby Riady theatre too. A drinks reception will follow the lecture at 7.45pm.

Doors open at 5.45pm and the event is free to attend. People interested in coming are asked to register their attendance by emailing lectures@napier.ac.uk
To quiz Milton Glaser via Twitter use the hash tag #AskMilton and the best of the crowd-sourced questions will be put to him on the night. The March 9 event will be recorded and available online afterwards.
