Implications of the UK leaving the EU
On 23 June 2016 The United Kingdom voted in a referendum to leave the European Union and on 29 March 2017, the Prime Minister triggered Article 50 to officially begin the process of leaving. Nothing has changed for our EU students and our participation in the Erasmus+ programme. Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty foresees a two-year negotiation process between the UK and other Member States, during which time the terms of the UK’s exit from the European Union will be decided. In the meantime, this page will address the immediate issues for our EU students, both current and prospective, as developments occur.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate applicants
The Scottish Government has confirmed that for those already enrolled or preparing to study in Scotland commencing in September 2018, existing funding arrangements will apply during the intended length of the students studies.
- For Undergraduate Students this means European Union students can still (subject to residency criteria) apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland to have the cost of their tuition fees paid on their behalf.
- For Postgraduate study, tuition fees which are set by the University for students commencing in September 2018 or before will not be increased for these students above the level payable by Scottish domiciled students for the intended duration of their study.

Current students
Current EU students' immigration status and associated fee status have not changed as a result of the vote. This will remain the case until there are further developments.
Erasmus students and applicants
The University will continue to participate in the Erasmus scheme in 2016/17, and until further notice. In the meantime:
- The immigration status of EU students studying in the UK under the Erasmus programme has not changed, and they continue to be eligible for their Erasmus grant until at least as long as we remain a member of the EU and possibly beyond that point.
- The immigration status of UK students studying in the EU and elsewhere under the Erasmus programme has not changed, and they continue to be eligible for their Erasmus grant until at least as long as we remain a member of the EU and possibly beyond that point.
