Psychology

Within the Psychology Research Group, we are proud to consider ourselves as a supportive and collegiate team. We are continuously developing and expanding our research capacity and our research culture to deliver excellent, theory-informed and applied research outputs. 

In recent years we have watched our research culture grow, with an increasing number of postgraduate students, research assistants, and research interns joining our team to create a thriving research community. We work on both theory driven and applied research, with the majority of our research having a strong multidisciplinary focus. We have existing collaborative links with non-psychologists within and outwith the university and with non-academic stakeholders too, to add real-world, applied value to our research. 


We offer methodological expertise which is not psychology specific, such as quantitative (statistical) expertise, qualitative expertise (e.g., in Lacanian and Foucauldian discourse analysis), and in developing and analysing applied, mixed methods projects. Our key research clusters are Forensic Psychology and Applied Cognition, and some examples of our work in these areas are presented below. However, our staff research across more areas than these, working with other groups within and outwith the university, with some notable examples including applied health research, critical psychology, and occupational psychology.

Forensic Psychology

Our Forensic Psychology research has a broad, applied focus. Some examples of our work in this area include programmatic research investigating:

  • Aversive personalities and cross cultural differences in the application of Forensic Psychology
  • Sensational interests (e.g., deliberate weight gain and feederism)
  • Memory for faces: eye-witness memory and identification of perpetrators
  • Suicide risk assessment from a person centred perspective
  • Clinical decision-making in violence risk assessment, and decision making applied to other forensic contexts

Applied Cognition

Our applied cognition research is largely interlinked with our Forensic Psychology research. Some examples of the innovative research being conducted under this cluster include:

  • Facial identification, construction of facial composites and facial image comparison for border control
  • Visual search and movement behaviour and how it is influenced by age, attentional load and dyslexia
  • Creativity and how it is affected by ageing and the cognitive processes involved
  • Creativity in relation to ADHD

Both of our key research clusters feed directly in to our MSc in Applied Criminology and Forensic Psychology, as we apply our extensive research expertise and utilise our external contacts to facilitate the students’ learning and experiences on the course. Other Research Areas

In addition to the key research clusters, members of our team are involved in research in: applied health research (person centered care, outcome measurement, and developing complex interventions); critical psychology (questions of ethics, politics, identity and discrimination); occupational psychology (inter-professional working and professional identity); educational psychology and pedagogic research; and developmental psychology.

Research Environment

To support our research we have custom-designed, state of the art psychology labs. These boast an observation lab, a 3D/4D lab, mobile and stationary eye-tracking equipment, a visual perception lab, and a neuroimaging laboratory (for EEG). We have a number of flexible lab rooms which can be adjusted to suit specific research projects, and our award winning psychology technician is highly trained and skilled in the key hard- and software for sophisticated experiments.
