Disability Equality

We are proud of our record of widening access to education for communities sometimes overlooked by society in the past. We recognise however that there is still some way for us to go before we can confidently state that all barriers have been removed, both physical and more importantly attitudinal.

Edinburgh Napier University will continue to use the social model to describe disability and by that we mean that it is society and the way it operates that disables people. This is in contrast to the 'medical model' of disability which sees the disabled person as the problem.

We welcome the strengthening of the law to outlaw discrimination because of the protected characteristic of disability within the Equality Act 2010 and will continue to build on the success we have had to date. If you wish to view the reports we produced under the old legislation you can do so by clicking on the links below. The outstanding activity previously contained within our Disability Equality Scheme 2009-12 has now been incorporated into our Equality Scheme and Action Plan 2010-13.

Working at the University

The University welcomes applications for employment from disabled people and signed-up to the 'Positive About Disabled People' initiative (also known as the 'Two Ticks' initiative) in June 2009.

This means we guarantee an interview to all disabled applicants, provided they meet the essential selection criteria for the post.

If you are applying for a post within the University you must declare your disability on the application form and tell us what, if any, reasonable adjustment you would require if you were invited to interview.
