Gender Equality

Edinburgh Napier University has made great strides in recent years towards a more representative gender balance at all levels of its workforce. For instance, our Principal and Vice Chancellor Joan Stringer, is the first woman to hold the post in a Scottish University.

That's not to say that we think we have achieved gender equality. Although we have near parity in percentage terms there remain areas or professions where there is over-representation of one gender or the other. If you wish to see a more detailed breakdown you can view our Annual Staff Diversity Report 2008.

Within the student population there are also some challenges to address, especially in the gender-biased choices of courses. We will do all we can to break down stereotypical gender roles by supporting individuals to break into areas traditionally viewed as 'male' or 'female' preserves.

If you wish to view the work we have done to date you can do so by clicking on the links below. Any outstanding activity from our Gender Equality Scheme has been incorporated into the Equality Scheme and Action Plan 2010-13.

Equal Pay Statement

The University is committed to equal pay for all and will put this commitment into practice byl:

  • Conducting equal pay reviews on a regular basis
  • Carrying out regular monitoring of the impact of our practices and report at least every three years
  • Informing employees of how these practices work and how their own pay is derived
  • Providing training and guidance for managers and employees involved in decisions about pay and benefits
  • Consulting and seeking agreement with all relevant parties, including employees and recognised trades unions on equal pay policy
  • Responding to grievances on equal pay as a priority
  • Monitoring pay statistics annually

We intend, through the above action, to avoid unlawful discrimination and thereby to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the University and enhance its reputation as an employer of choice.
