Carbon Management
Edinburgh Napier University is committed to reducing its environmental footprint. This includes emissions of carbon dioxide from all areas of University life. The University also encourages staff, students and visitors to consider their emissions at home and emissions created when commuting to Edinburgh Napier.
We are currently working with SKM Enviros and the Carbon Trust in Scotland to update our 2009 Carbon Management Plan. The updated Plan will be available from the start of June. The information below still provides an indepth overview of the work carreid out at Edinburgh Napier to date.
Carbon Management Plan
Published in March 2009, the Carbon Management Plan
details and encapsulates this commitment.
The Plan details tonnes of carbon emitted at Edinburgh Napier through the main areas of Energy, Transport, Waste and Water. The Plan states that the University will strive to reduce carbon emissions by 25% from the baseline 2006/07 academic year. Projects planned, and already carried out to reduce emissions are detailed individually within the document. The first independent review of emissions reductions took place in April 2010, as part of the Carbon Trust Standard assessment. Read below for more information.
If you have any specific questions on the Carbon Management Plan, please do not hesitate to contact the Sustainability Office.
Carbon Trust Standard
The University was awarded the Carbon Trust Standard In May 2010, certificate attached.
To gain this accolade, reduction in carbon emissions associated with the use of gas and electricity and fuel used in all owned and leased vehicles at Edinburgh Napier was independently assessed and verified by the Standard assessors.
Collectively, the University reduced its carbon emissions during the three year period 1st August 2006 to 31st July 2009, by an absolute value of 19%, from 8,235.8 to 6,664.6 tonnes.
The turnover of the University increased over the three year period. When we link this increase to the reduction in in our carbon footprint, we gained an overall benchmark reduction of 24% between 1st August 2006 and 31st July 2009.
The Standard is a mark of excellence. It proves that the University is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. The reductions above are real. The University has not off-set any of its emissions. To gain the reductions, as part of our wider carbon management programme, projects carried out include:
Development and use of Building Energy Management System. Use of the System to meet daily heating and ventilation needs of campuses, linked to occupancy.
New, more efficient, boilers at Craighouse.
Draft proofing of windows and installation of better roof insulation at Merchiston.
Lighting surveys and lighting upgrades.
Communication programmes to encourage staff and students to reduce their own environmental footprint and also to consider and adapt the amount of utilities they consume at Edinburgh Napier.
