Fair Trade

Edinburgh Napier University gained Fair Trade University status in 2009.  Gaining reaccreditation in September 2010, the University and Napier Students' Association have shown continued commitment to:

  • Making Fair Trade foods and drinks available in all shops and cafés.  Visit the Cafe Direct website for more information on their products.
  • Serving Fairtrade beverages at all meetings.  Visit the Catering website to order refreshments.
  • Campaigning for increased procurement of Fairtrade goods across the University.

Edinburgh Napier has a Fairtrade Policy in place covering the University and Napier Students’ Association.  The Fairtrade Working Group ensure that work develops in this area.  Read the minutes from our meetings on 28/11/08, 09/01/09, 13/02/09, 27/03/09, 09/11/09 and 13/01/10.  If you would like to become a member of this Group, do not hesitate to contact the Sustainability Office.

View our Fair Trade status application form, and feedback, gained in September 2010.  The City of Edinburgh is a Fairtrade City.  The University is represented on the Edinburgh Fair Trade Steering Group by Jamie Pearson, Sustainability/Environmental Advisor.

What is Fairtrade?

“Fairtrade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equality in international trade.  It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalised producers and workers, especially in the South.  Fairtrade organisations, backed by consumers, are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade”

(Accepted definition of Fair Trade accepted by FINE, an informal association of four international Fairtrade networks).
