Travelling to and from Sighthill
Our general transport page contains a wealth of information regarding travelling in and around the City of Edinburgh and beyond. The information below provides specific information for travelling to and from our Sighthill campus. The attached document gives guidance for travelling between all Edinburgh Napier campuses.
Bus Network
The Traveline Scotland website can help you plan your journey using the bus network. Sighthill is well served by bus services from Lothian Buses, First Bus, E&M Horsburgh and Stagecoach.
We have created a simple leaflet showing the buses that stop around our Sighthill campus. Using hyperlinks, the spreadsheet takes you directly to the appropriate Bus Tracker link for each service, shows the location of each bus stop and links to the route map supplied by the service provider.
There are Bus Tracker displays at bus stops throughout the city, and more specifically on Calder Road. The screens at the main entrance to Sighthill, once operational, will also display bus departure times. But, you can check the time of your bus at your desk! Either use the leaflet showing the buses that stop around our Sighthill campus or visit the Bus Tracker website and search by postcode, bus stop code or service. The site also contains information on how to download Bus Tracker onto your mobile phone. Please note that Bus Tracker only shows Lothian Buses services.
Rail Network
Edinburgh Park, South Gyle and Wester Hailes train stations are all within close walking distance to Sighthill. Open each train station link for more information on the station, as well as services that stop at each station. For many services, you will have to change trains at either Waverley or Haymarket train stations. As per bus travel, the Traveline Scotland website can help you plan your journey. Also, the Journey Check website, linked to Scotrail, shows departure and arrival times from all train stations.
Walking and Cycling
The City of Edinburgh Council have created walking and cycling maps covering the entire city. Sighthill is covered by the South West map. Of course, your journey to Sighthill may not start within the South West area. Visit the City of Edinburgh Council website for all maps. SPOKES, a local cycling charity also produce excellent maps. The CycleStreets website can help you plan your cycle journey, with a facility to filter quieter routes.
There are 170 cycle parking spaces at Sighthill. 100 of these are under cover and in locked storage areas, 50 underneath the ramp up to the main entrance and 50 next to the sports centre. For a key, contact Security. Showers and lockers are available in the sports centre.
Car
Visit the Traffic Scotland website, prior to your journey, for information on roadworks and congestion.
The University has contributed to the creation of a new road junction connecting Sighthill Court to Calder Road. This will allow vehicles, travelling out of the city, on Calder Road, to turn right down Sighthill Court. Vehicles leaving the campus will be able to turn right onto Calder Road. At the moment, you may have to travel to the next roundabout, and double back on yourself, to access or leave the campus. A crossing for pedestrians and cyclists will also be installed.
There are access barriers to our car park. Only permit holders, are permitted to park. Visitors parking spaces must be booked through Security. For information on parking permits at Sighthill, read the attached Sighthill Parking Guidance Note and Parking Policy. Apply for a permit. A limited number of permits are available for students.
There are no charges for parking on the public streets around our Sighthill campus. But, the area is very busy, with many roads full of parked cars early on and throughout the day. Staff, students and visitors, parking on the public streets, are asked to park sensibly and respect our neighbours by not parking in 'residents only' areas.
To reduce single car occupancy, and investigate opportunities for car sharing, visit the City of Edinburgh Council Tripshare site. Also, we hope to have one City Car Club vehicles on-site by March 2011. There are also park and ride facilities throughout Edinburgh, including Hermiston Gait and Newcraighall Train Station.
