The Application Process
Edinburgh Napier University believes that equality of opportunity is essential to achieving its vision – to be a world class, modern University - and to widen access to higher education and develop enthusiasm for learning throughout life.
As an Employer of Choice we positively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. The successful candidate will be selected solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential regardless of gender, colour, ethnic or national origin, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, socio-economic background, religious or political beliefs, trade union membership, family circumstances or other irrelevant distinction.
The recruitment and selection process is managed by recruitment contacts across the school and service areas of the University.
How to Apply
We have recently introduced an online recruitment system. All job applicants must submit their application online through the system in three simple steps.
- Select the vacancy you want to apply for from our vacancies list.
- Create a user account and password – you will need an email address. If you have registered with us before, please log in with your previous user details.
- Go back to the vacancy and complete the online application form. Providing you save your application as you work through it, you can log out and log back in to your application as many times as you need to.
You can log back into the online recruitment system to view your application after it has been submitted. Please note, this does not show you the status of your application.
Applicants with a Disability
The University guarantees an interview to all disabled applicants provided they meet the essential selection criteria for the post. If you are applying for any post within the University you must declare the disability on the online application form and tell us about any reasonable adjustment you would require if you were invited to interview.
Further information is available on our Disability Equality page.
Typetalk users please dial 18001 before the numbers quoted.
If you have a disability, and as a result are unable to complete the online application form, please contact VMS@napier.ac.uk or Human Resources on 0131 453 3754 to discuss alternative application arrangements, for instance using a Word document or a paper based application form.
Completing the Application Form
Applicants should ensure that all fields in the application form have been completed accurately. It is acceptable to submit a CV as well as the online application, however the application form will be the primary source of information used for short listing.
If you are an applicant applying from outwith the EEA, you should check the UK Border and Immigration Agency website to verify the criteria for being eligible to work in the UK. Further information for applicants applying from out with the EEA is available on our Applicants from Overseas page.
Please do not hesitate to contact the recruitment contact if you have any questions regarding the vacancy or application process. If you have not heard from the recruitment contact within 2 weeks after the close date, please assume that your application has not been successful. If you have not been successful in this application, we still encourage you to apply for other suitable positions with us.
Next Stage
If your application has been successful, we will invite you to attend an interview. You will receive a letter confirming the date, time, location and who you will be meeting.
You must bring along to your interview:
- Photographic ID which confirms your identity. A full list of accepted documents is listed in the
Eligibility document checklist.
- Documentation relevant to your application, including proof of your ability to meet the essential criteria of the job, educational certificates and proof of professional qualifications or membership
- Your ongoing / limited right to work in the UK (if applicable)
Original documentation must be supplied - we cannot accept any photocopies. Copies of your documentation will be taken, verified by the Interview Chair person and returned to you at the end of the interview.
Applications from Overseas
If you are applying from outwith the EEA, please refer to Applicants from Overseas for further information.
How to Apply FAQs
Q: I don’t have a computer – can I receive a paper application form?
A: No – other than disability circumstances that make it impossible to apply online there are no exceptions – all applications must be done online. Free internet access is provided in most public libraries along with some support in using the internet. You will need an email account to create an user account for our system.
Q: Will late applications be accepted?
A: Our vacancies are published on the web for at least two weeks to allow candidates plenty of time to apply. Late applications will not be accepted after the published close date.
Q: Who can see my application?
A: Your application is visible to the Recruitment Contact for that post and all panel members involved in shortlisting or interviewing. The information on the Equal Opportunities part of form is only available to the Human Resources team. If you have informed us about a disability and any reasonable adjustments you may need for an interview, HR will liaise with the Recruitment Contact to ensure that appropriate arrangements are made.
Q: Can I withdraw my application after it has been submitted?
A: Yes – please advise the Recruitment Contact for that particular vacancy and they will update your record accordingly.
Q: Will you contact my referees before interview?
A: We aim to do this wherever possible. However, if you do not want us to approach your referees before interview please indicate this on the online application form. If you are successful, a verbal offer can only be made when there are 2 satisfactory references. We recommend that you ensure your referees know that you have used their names before we contact them to obtain the references. It is essential that you give clear and full contact details for your referees (preferably email) to minimise any delay to the appointment process.
