Gonçalo Cunha de Sá

Gonçalo Cunha de Sá graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with a BA in Photography, Film and Imaging in 2000. He thoroughly enjoyed living in Scotland’s capital and really made the most of his time here. He said:
“My time in Edinburgh was great. I love the city and all it has to offer. I loved going to the Old Town and having drinks in the Grassmarket. I also loved roaming around the Meadows, where I sat with friends and played the guitar. Edinburgh is such a cosmopolitan city and you mingle with people from all parts of the world, which makes it even more interesting - sharing ideas and experiences!
I lived close to campus – it was just a short walk from my flat. I learnt so much when I was at Napier and really enjoyed my course. Robin Gillanders was one of my favourite tutors.”
After graduating Gonçalo returned to Portugal, where he worked as a photo reporter on a national newspaper. He then moved on to working for a variety of advertising agencies, as well as teaching Photography at the Visual Arts, Design and Marketing Institute in Lisbon where two of his students won first and second prizes in a national competition.
As a photographer Gonçalo has always been socially aware and this is reflected in his work, which includes campaign work and co-authoring a number of books. He has had solo and group exhibitions in his native Portugal, as well as in Spain, France and the United Kingdom.
Gonçalo specialises in portraiture and has photographed many personalities, including the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and the Portuguese film director Manoel Oliveira.
