Brief Biography
Tijana is a Lecturer in Tourism and Events and Deputy Postgraduate Tourism, Hospitality and Events Programmes Leader. She teaches on a range of postgraduate and undergraduate modules. She has designed and developed two postgraduate modules: ‘Tourism Marketing’ and ‘Tourism, Society and Visual Culture’ and has taught on a range of undergraduate modules. She is also the co-ordinator for MSc dissertations in Tourism, Hospitality, Festivals and Events and has supervised a number of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations. She is currently co-supervising two PhD students.
Her research interests and publications lie predominantly in the areas of heritage, tourism, and national identity, visual and creative research methodologies, ethnography, semiotics, visual culture, the relationships between travel, tourism and art, and history of tourism in Greece and the Balkans. Some of the academic research projects she has been involved with include a study surrounding the future of UNESCO’s World Heritage List, a study about tourism impacts in the island of Crete, a study about the history of tourism at the Athenian Acropolis, and her interdisciplinary doctoral research rooted in cultural geography and visual anthropology which explored the relationships between World Heritage, tourism and national identity at the Acropolis. Her doctoral research, philosophically underpinned by constructivism, was marked by a reliance on a variety of visual, alongside more traditional, research methods. As a result, research outputs from her PhD include the thesis, academic papers, a short video, and a 26 minute ethnographic documentary film 'Visiting the Athenian Acropolis' (2008). In addition to these research activities, she has also been involved in the production of a number of documentaries which, alongside her PhD film about the visitors at the Athenian Acropolis, also includes a documentary about tourism impacts in Crete titled 'Of Holidays and Olives' (2006, researcher & co-director) and a documentary about people living on the Greek side of the Prespa Lakes titled 'Silent Waters' (2009, co-camera & co-interviewer, directed by Yorgos Karagiannakis).
She is a member of a range of academic bodies and networks, which among other also include her Fellowships at the Higher Education Academy and the Royal Geographical Society. She regularly acts as a reviewer for a number of international tourism journals including Annals of Tourism Research and Tourism Management and has held invited lectures and seminars on research philosophies and visual methods.
