Brief Biography
Mike is the Director of Leadership Development at Edinburgh Napier University Business School, spearheading a new leadership development initiative in Scotland. In the previous ten years, Mike worked in the Irish Management Institute, where as Head of Leadership, Coaching and Personal Development he built a new generation of leadership programmes and services drawing on the disciplines of management science and psychology.
He has worked at all levels within ‘Times Top Ten’, large and small organisations throughout Asia, Europe and the US on mergers, board succession, restructuring, culture change and other strategic aspects of Organisation Development. Across Europe, he has coached and mentored senior executives and their teams through both leadership and personal professional development. Most recently he has delivered leadership development, coaches and consults with management teams in Depuy, Dell, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Waters Technologies AIB Capital Markets, Permanent TSB, Irish Life, GSK and the Irish Civil Service to name a few.
His extensive career experience includes board and management posts in education, marketing, manufacturing, sales and consulting in markets covering scientific instrumentation, media, production equipment, hygiene services, leisure, hotel and educational organisations.
Mike introduced and spearheaded the use of Positive Psychology, Emotional and social intelligence and the Performing Arts in leadership, team and personal development in Ireland. His combined use of cross discipline learning methods has been described as “the missing link in leadership.” He was the specialist coach on a series of six programmes produced for the Irish state TV broadcaster RTE, titled “No experience required”. This series explored the idea that “If you find a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life”. It gave unqualified and inexperienced individuals an opportunity to explore their talents and what they really value in order to excel in a series of highly desirable jobs.
He has collaborated and contributed as an author and workshop leader for Henley Management College Programmes. He developed experiential materials, case studies and residential schools for The Open University Business School MBA programmes and additionally contributing as a critical reader their new materials. He has recently worked with the University of Warwick Business School on the development of their Practice of Management for MBAs.
He is a charismatic and highly regarded media and conference speaker on the themes of “Authentic Leadership” and “Emotional and social intelligence”, has delivered keynote sessions at conferences throughout Europe, and was judged as the top rated speaker at the CIPD “Psychology at Work” and leadership conferences in London and Dublin.
He is a passionate believer in meaningfulness at all levels in the workplace and a significant proportion of his work focuses on authentic and positive leadership and its development in teams.
