The Edinurgh Institute has an established Festival & Event Management Division, reflecting the fact that Edinburgh and Scotland are major tourist destinations, and the host of numerous international festivals each year. Our MSc International Event & Festival Management is a prime example of how we are providing the educational underpinning to support a major aspect of the local economy.

Marketing

Marketing is the lifeblood of every successful company. No matter how good a product or service is, if that company can’t make the world aware of it, and encourage a large number of people to buy it, then the company will fail.

Marketing gets more and more sophisticated as years go by. With ‘teaser’ campaigns; BOGOF (buy one, get one free) offers;  direct and interactive marketing that makes use of new technology such as the internet and phone texting, not to mention many other techniques, marketing is a fascinating and challenging area to study, and in which to work.

Tourism, Festivals & Events and Hospitality

Tourism is so much more than sun, sea and sandals! It’s a great subject area to study, and a great business sector to work in. The tourism programmes offered in the School of Marketing and Tourism give you the opportunity to enjoy both.

Tourism is a business that brings together all the elements of our life: people, travel, culture, business, entertainment, leisure, lifestyles, marketing, communication, law, economics, heritage, nature, buildings, countries, cities, towns, villages, and the countryside. It is also a huge money-generating activity and is responsible for incredible movements of people throughout the world, travelling both within their own country and overseas.

Edinburgh and Edinburgh Napier University together provide a perfect environment for a stimulating and successful higher education in the related areas of Tourism, Events and Festivals, and Hospitality. The combination of a beautiful and lively city to live in; a well structured curriculum to study; excellent academic staff to support and enable learning; and our extensive links with industry – both locally in Edinburgh and further afield, together with Professional Accreditation by the Institute of Hospitality for our programmes in this area, help ensure our graduates can be found in management roles within all sectors of the industry. We hope you’ll come to follow in their footsteps.

Languages

Only 6% of the world’s population speaks English as its first language and 75% of the world’s population don’t speak any English at all. Being able to communicate fluently in another language can make the world of difference in your ability to succeed in the modern, globalised workplace.

Demand for Languages is increasing and employers are recognising the value of multi-lingual employees who have the skills and flexibility to operate in international environments. Not only can you understand what is going on, you have the intercultural skills to break down the barriers between colleagues and business from different parts of the world. A recent CBI survey revealed that 74% of British companies want to employ people with at least conversational skills in a foreign language, and that this figure is likely to grow. Learn a skill which will enhance your life and your employment prospects by studying a language.
