Success Stories - Communicating Effectively with Others

Within the "Communication Skills for Clinical Practice" module in years 1, 2 and 3 of the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social Care, Adult Nurses make use of three Confident Futures workshops which are positioned before and after clinical practice, designed to enhance students' communication skills in each year of their programme. All activities are customised to use practical and realistic clinical practice examples.

Within the Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Guidance, the Transactional Analysis model is used in the "Interacting with Others" workshop, as part of the preparation for students in communicating well with careers guidance clients, in particular within the young person's environment.

"Interacting with Others" and "Knowing Yourself & Others" are used in the 1st year Human Computer Interaction module in the School of Computing, both to develop communication and group work skills with new students and also to resonate with the communication themes of the module content. The "Interacting with Others" workshop is used early in the module to provide students with a framework to analyse the dynamic aspects of communication, for use when working with other students and also when embedding communication within their software design. "Knowing Yourself & Others" is positioned immediately prior to an intensive week-long group assignment, to provide students with a foundation for constructive teamwork.
