Communication | Working with Others

Purpose of this workshop

To understand assertive behaviour and learn how and when to use it to your advantage.

At university, at work and in our personal lives, difficulties can arise because we are often not able to communicate honestly and directly with one another. It is not always easy to do this for many reasons. However, when you interact consistently from a base of assertive communication, relationships can flourish in an atmosphere of trust. This workshop is designed to help you identify exactly what assertive behaviour is and where you might consciously choose to adopt it when dealing with others.

Content of this workshop

Initially you will explore and clarify what assertive behaviour ‘is’ and equally importantly ‘is not’, and what the consequences may be of adopting other forms of less appropriate behaviour. The workshop will give you some key tools for behaving assertively and provide an opportunity to develop your ability to be assertive in a situation relevant to you. Although there is a serious basis for assertiveness, the workshop is relaxed and informal way during the workshop, based around exercises that are useful and fun to do.

By the end of this workshop you will have:

  • identified the characteristics of assertive behaviour
  • identified key tools to help you be more assertive when appropriate
  • devised strategies to adopt more assertive behaviour in one key area of your life

Benefits for students:

  • enhanced communication and relationship-building skills in professional and personal environments e.g. on placement and working with others
  • preparation for professional roles demanding advanced communication skills e.g. dealing with clients or patients
  • strategies for dealing with aggressive or submissive behaviour in others
