Making Feedback Work for You
Professional Working | Manage Yourself
Purpose of the Workshop
To learn how to respond positively and constructively to feedback
The mental attitude or mindset you adopt to learning and your academic work can influence the outcome and success of just about everything you do. As you face the challenges of University, and indeed anything in life, research shows your chosen attitude can affect not only how you experience the journey but also your potential for success - making things either easier or harder for yourself. In this workshop, by exploring what your mindset may be and whether it is supportive of achieving your aims and goals, you will learn how to manage your attitudes and response to feedback in order to optimise your chances of success.
Content of the workshop:
This workshop offers a model that you can use to examine the attitudes you (subconsciously) bring to your studies and how that can affect your response to situations such as: giving or receiving feedback; facing risk; putting in effort; and dealing with setbacks. You will examine why you may be adopting self defeating attitudes that affect your response to feedback and subsequent actions you take. Finally you will explore how you can replace them with approaches that are likely to help you to be the best you can be.
By the end of the workshop you will have:
- identified the mindset you have towards learning and other challenges in your life, and how it manifests itself in your language and activities
- assessed your mindset in the light of relevant research, and reflected upon how that may affect your self-motivation, approach to feedback and chances of success
- applied this learning to a feedback related activity - generating useful resultant actions
- devised a personal approach that allows conscious choice of attitudes that promote success
Benefits to students:
- respond positively and constructively to the feedback provided on your university work
- gain insight into how your personal attitude(s) may hold you back from being the best you can be
- motivate yourself more quickly into action in response to feedback, challenges and difficult situations
