The School of Engineering and the Built Environment offers a range of engaging, challenging and highly relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses that primarily equip graduates to pursue rewarding careers within their chosen discipline.

In the Guardian University League Tables 2015, Edinburgh Napier University ranked as the top UK Modern University and the top Scottish Modern University for studying General Engineering and the top UK Modern University for studying Civil Engineering. In the National Student Survey 2014 our Building and Surveying courses ranked second highest in the UK with 96% overall student satisfaction.

These programmes are highly valued by employers and consequently endow excellent salaries for those holding the qualification. The courses also provide a strong academic foundation for those who wish to progress to further study or research work.

Our applied research with industry and government is highly valued and is rated as international and world leading. During the last four years out staff have worked with industry, government and leading research institutes involving over 45 countries.

Our research encompasses building performance, transport, geotechnics, energy and renewables, advanced materials, smartcities, offsite construction, construction technologies, sensors, acoustic engineering, innovative structures, timber engineering and wood science.

The school currently hosts the Institute for Sustainable Construction and the Transport Research Institute, two internationally leading research institutes.
