Beacon Wards

Beacon Wards are NHS Lothian centres of excellence in Compassionate Care.  These wards will identify and showcase areas of good practice in Leadership and Compassionate Care.

All wards in NHS Lothian were invited to apply for Beacon Ward status in 2007.  A total of 18 applications were received from a range of wards.  Applicants were required to submit a portfolio of evidence that met specific criteria.  The criteria were designed by the project development group and had three key dimensions, caring environment, ward/team management and staff governance.  Four Beacon wards were selected to be the focus for the initial programme of work.

Work continues with the original four Beacon Wards, this includes staff from these areas participating in the Leadership strand of the programme and taking forward action projects. Since March 2009 work commenced with four new Development Sites to explore what was learnt from the Beacon Wards. Development Sites offer the opportunity to test out what we have learnt in a range of different settings. For more information about the Development Sites please refer to the link below.
