Undergraduate Curriculum
This strand of the project aims to embed the principles of compassionate care into the undergraduate curriculum at Edinburgh Napier University.
The programme is based on a principle of working with students and lecturers to enhance learning and experiences related to compassionate care. We have started to look into some action projects as a result of what we have found, however it is essential that we alongside academic staff and students collaboratively. Members of the LCC team will approach lecturers and students and ask for support to develop these action projects. If you are interested in getting involved please speak to any of the team (identified in the who's who section of the web pages) we would be delighted to hear from you. Initial action projects are focussed on the following areas;
• Consider how to present patient stories throughout the curriculum to enable a developing understanding of compassionate care
• Consider how students alongside mentors and Practice Education Facilitators can provide feedback to wards about their experiences of compassion and caring.
• Consider busy clinical areas, where there is rapid turnover of patients, how do staff develop relationships and provide compassionate care within this context? Use evidence from Combined Assessment Area (Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh) one of the LCC programmes Development Sites.
• Consider proactive ways of supporting lecturers with emotional costs associated with the provision of compassionate care to students and practice staff.
• Consider how to maximise the opportunity for candidates to present their compassionate and caring attributes during the recruitment process.
• Consider how to assess compassionate caring skills throughout the curriculum, for example optimise current assessment activity during simulation, role play and use of actor patients.
• Consider how to include compassionate care as a component of a student’s personal development planning process.
