Innovative construction techniques to improve noise insulation pioneered by the Building Performance Centre at Edinburgh Napier University have led to a four-fold drop in complaints about noise from neighbours in new build homes and benefited over half a million home owners. The research has now has received the highest accolade that can be conferred on a higher or further education institution in the UK – the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for 2009. It is the only university in Scotland to receive the prize on this occasion.
The prize, which was officially awarded at Buckingham Palace on 18 February 2010, recognises the effect that this world leading research has had on revolutionising new-home building practices and standards in England and Wales including the development of Robust Details Ltd for use in the Building Standard Regulations.
The new innovative constructions dramatically reduce noise transmission within new homes and have also led to a range of other benefits for the environment and society. This recognition complements the world-leading classification awarded to Architecture and Built Environment during the Research Assessment Exercise 2008.
The prize was presented by Her Majesty The Queen at a national honours ceremony held at Buckingham Palace in February 2010.
