Funding for EU students

Undergraduate Students

When planning on studying, and especially when you’re considering studying in another country, money can be a worry.  The good news for non-UK EU students studying in Scotland is that there are no tuition fees.  Instead your tuition fee is paid for by the Scottish Government through the Students Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

To be eligible for a tuition fees only award you must meet the following conditions:

  • You are a non-UK EU national, an EU overseas territories national or the family member of either.
  • You have been ordinarily resident in the EU, the EU overseas territories, elsewhere in the EEA or Switzerland for the three years immediately before the first day of the first academic year of your course (the relevant date).
  • You are taking a course of full-time study in Scotland and plan to graduate in Scotland .

In some cases you may even be eligible for the full-support package offered by SAAS which includes help with tuition fees, a loan, and, in some cases, the option of applying for a bursary and supplementary grants.

To be eligible for the full-support package you must meet the following conditions:

  • You are a non-UK EU national or the child of such a national;
  • You have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the three years immediately before the relevant date (1st  August); and
  • You are ordinarily resident in Scotland on the relevant date (1st August).

To get this funding you must apply to SAAS as early as possible.  You can complete their application form online.

Please note: You must apply to SAAS at the beginning of each year of study in Scotland, each application is only valid for one year.

For more information on funding for non-UK EU students visit the SAAS website or download their information leaflet on ‘Funding for EU and International Students'.  More information can be found on funding arrangements from our Money Matters pages.

Postgraduate Students

The Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS)  also offers funding for some full-time postgraduate vocational programmes at diploma level.

Edinburgh Napier University currently has 145 postgraduate programmes which are supported by SAAS .

The funding is offered on a competitive basis and is at the discretion of the Programme Leader.  If you are nominated for funding, you will then be asked to complete a SAAS application form.  If successful, your fees will be paid for the first nine months of your programme (to diploma level).

For more information on funding assistance for postgraduate non-UK EU students, visit the SAAS website or our Money Matters pages.
