Who is eligible?

Edinburgh Napier University welcomes North American students who attend our partner universities in North America to apply for a single trimester or full academic year placement here as a Study Abroad/Exchange student.

You will need to contact your home University Study Abroad Coordinator for details of any existing exchange agreement with Edinburgh Napier University, or if your university participates in the ISEP programme.

Any students applying from outwith our ISEP and existing exchange partners can contact studyabroad@napier.ac.uk for further information, or contact our representative, Center for International Studies, for advice and assistance regarding Study Abroad opportunities at Edinburgh Napier.

Academic Matters

Study Abroad and Exchange students may choose classes (called "modules" in the UK) from across all three faculties (Engineering, Computing & Creative Industries; Health, Life & Social Sciences and the Business School), providing a rich, diverse and flexible study abroad experience.  All exchange students are offered the opportunity to take out Scottish Culture and Society modules, which introduces students to Scottish culture through lectures and organised excursions.

Students will take three 20 credit Edinburgh Napier classes/modules per semester, which is a full-time load and equates to approximately 15 US credit hours.  All module selections are subject to availability and timetabling and your programme of study will usually be confirmed on arrival at the University because schedules are not available until right before the start of the course.  We will try our hardest to ensure you can enrol on your specific module selections, but we advise you choose a few backup classes in your application just in case.

Important note:  There are restrictions on available classes for Music, Journalism, Design and Film & Photography students.  Admission onto these programmes will require students to be majoring in the subject are at their home institutions, and while at Edinburgh Napier, students MAY be asked to take all three of their modules per trimester in this subject (as opposed to one module in journalism, one in business, etc).

Visas

Students coming for a single semester do not need to apply for a visa in advance of entering the UK.  However, you will enter as a “student visitor” category instead and will need to show the border patrol at the airport evidence of this, primarily a letter from Edinburgh Napier University which we will send you.  See British Council USA website for guidance on documentation needed.  You will not be eligible to work part-time or extend your stay for an additional semester.

If you are a single semester student and desire to apply for a student visa, to give you flexibility to extend your stay or work part-time, please contact studyabroad@napier.ac.uk as you will need different documentation to be sent to you.

Students who will stay for the full year MUST apply for a student visa in advance of departure and can find guidance about the process here.

Accommodation

You can apply to live in University Accommodation or opt for housing in the private sector.

There are several buildings of University Accommodation throughout Edinburgh.  Please note, these are not located “on campus” like you might be used to from home, but in other regards, they operate fairly similarly to a dormitory with single bedrooms and shared facilities and common areas.  These will mostly be occupied by visiting international students, not Scottish students, who generally live in shared flats around town.

As an alternative to university accommodation, you will find there are a large number of furnished, shared student flats throughout the city—this usually comes with the benefits of more space, a little less expense, and a great way to initially make friends.  If you are interested in a shared flat, the International Office is happy to assist you in the process, give you advice about good neighbourhoods, etc.  There is also a Facebook group and other online sites that assist you in linking up with other students and finding available flats.  Edinburgh is a very safe and student-friendly city so don’t be intimidated by this option, even if you have never lived “off campus” previously.  However, in this case we recommend you arrive in Edinburgh 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the induction events to ensure you have plenty of time to settle in.  You can book a very inexpensive hostel room for your arrival and move into your flat from there.

All students who are coming through ISEP exchange or who are accepted through ISEP Direct with Housing option will be placed in University housing unless they request to live in a student flat off campus.  If this option is chosen, the equivalent sum of money you are paying for your ISEP programme expenses will be given to you in the form of a stipend which you can use in paying your rent. Please get in touch with ISEP directly if you wish to pursue this option.  Other individual Study Abroad students are highly likely to receive accommodation if requested although this cannot be guaranteed as University housing is highly limited and is dependent on the number of applications.

ISEP-Direct students who apply late are still welcome to come to the university, but should be advised that university housing fills to capacity and you may need to be willing to find a shared flat instead (please check with your ISEP Co-ordinator if this concerns you).

CIS Applicants: Please contact CIS for further details on housing benefits.

An accommodation application pack will be sent to all students once they have accepted an offer to study at Edinburgh Napier University. This application should be returned to the Student Accommodation Office by the specified deadline. Second semester students will be sent an application pack automatically which should be returned as soon as possible.
