Research and Business

Our research and knowledge transfer activities demonstrate the highest standards of excellence. We are focussed on undertaking research which is directly relevant to supporting sustainable economic growth in Scotland and in other countries. Our activities cover all of the priority sectors which have a direct and immediate economic impact and in many of these areas we are world-leading.

We were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for 2009. This is the first occasion in the history of the University that we have received this highly prestigious prize, which is awarded biennially to reward universities and colleges that demonstrate work of a world-class standard of excellence. The award was made for ‘Innovative housing construction for environmental benefit and quality of life’. It recognised the outstanding contribution knowledge exchange made by the Building Performance Centre and the development of Robust Details for use in the Building Standard Regulations.

Institutes

We have launched nine institutes designed to act as one-stop shops for businesses to access expertise, research, facilities and product testing.  The innovative approach will help develop over 300 new products and services and create more than 300 full-time equivalent new jobs.

The nine institutes offer direct technical support, grants, specialist skills, training, CPD, facilities and equipment in sectors identified as key growth areas by the Scottish government. These include construction, creative industries, digital markets, energy, financial services, food and drink, forest industries, life sciences, manufacturing, textiles, tourism and enabling technologies.

Together, the nine institutes will work with Scottish and international companies of all sizes – from small start-up companies and public bodies such as the NHS to multi-nationals such as Diageo, Johnson & Johnson, NCR GlaxoSmithKline and Jardine Matheson.
