Centre Overview

The Centre for Arts, Media and Culture (CAMC) is a multidisciplinary Centre for the critical study of the arts, media and culture. We are passionate about promoting an understanding of the arts and creativity in history and contemporary society. Our members study the social and cultural significance of visual and verbal communication as well as aesthetic practice, highlighting how language and cultural artefacts shape identities and communities on a local and global level.

Research approach

The arts, humanities and social sciences, in the British Academy’s words, "Help us make sense of the human world, to value and express the complexity of life and culture, and to understand and solve global issues". Driven by this belief in our research approach, we examine artistic genres, types of media and publishing; philosophical principles underpinning creative work; socio-historical, legal, ethical and industrial contexts for creative production and reception; art and literature’s interface with science and digital technology; cultural heritage and festivals. Many of our researchers work at the intersection of different disciplines to generate new knowledge, including the digital humanities, environmental humanities and critical prison studies.

Teaching

Our research informs teaching on a range of courses such as English, Creative Writing, Publishing, Design, Journalism, Film, Music, Psychology, Photography, Sociology, Creative Informatics, Tourism and Business Studies. Research students are an integral part of this research centre, and we welcome enquiries from prospective candidates wishing to pursue a Master by Research or PhD.

Centre impact

We are proud of our engagement with the wider community to help us further our vision of promoting the social relevance of the arts and culture. We have collaborated with a range of external partners in the cultural sector, third sector and industry, such as The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) City of Literature Trust, UNESCO Cities of Film Network, National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh Festivals, and the Scottish Prison Service.
