Arctic shipping highways.
Ships and sailors in the Arctic have traditionally faced fearsome hazards in the bitter winds and freezing waters, but today the ice is in retreat and the Arctic is opening up as a marine highway linking Europe, Asia and North America. Could that mean the revival of Orkney's old Arctic connections? Prof. Alfred Baird of Edinburgh Napier University looks at the challenges and opportunities that may lie ahead.
