City narratives in music: creating musical works that reflect urban realities relating to Valletta
"The research explores elements of community, identity, and cultural realities. It explores the way of life of the different Valletta communities and their divides, as well as people’s general perceptions. Among the many elements that make up Valletta’s rich fabric, by exploring elements of duality, community celebrations, football culture, and historical perceptions.

These aspects are then used to inform musical works that reflect the contemporary City in all its complexity. This includes issues of timbre and instrumentation (e.g. the heavy use of brass instruments to reflect the strong band tradition in Malta), the influence of popular culture (including the use of quotations of popular songs), formal considerations (the abstract versus the narrative), as well as contextual issues (creating works that remain true to their origin yet having a universal appeal).

The final portfolio will consist of a Concerto for Piano and Wind Band, a Symphony for 8 soloists and orchestra, and a set of choral motets.
