Programme Leader: Richard Firth

Product Design has been taught at Edinburgh Napier University for over 35 years. We can boast among our alumni leading designers at IDEO, Seymour Powell, Mazda, Dyson and Adidas to name but a few and our graduates form a very important and valuable link with industry.

This year we will be adding 18 more names to our list of graduates among who may be the leading lights of the next generation. These young designers are presenting an exciting range of new work from furniture to electronic devices, lighting to toys, and footwear to urban interventions. It’s been hard work over the last four years, but our graduates are now professionally focussed, highly employable and ready for work.

We have extended our industry based projects for 2nd and 3rd year, which has resulted in work placements in London, Beijing and across Scotland. Throughout the year we have been supported by a constant stream of visiting lecturers, alumni and guest tutors from industry. We have also established exciting project links within other areas of the university, and collaborated on projects within our local community.

Our students and graduates are also internationally focussed: we have added to our student exchange programmes in Norway and China, to now include universities in Denmark, Australia and France.

This has further galvanised the already strong sense of pride among our students and graduates, and secured a sense of community between our programme and the international design community.
