International students

Studying overseas can be a large financial commitment. Find out more about how to pay your fees, and what scholarships you can apply to.

Tuition fees

International students are required to pay tuition fees for the course of study.  How much you pay will depend on which course you study on.

To find out the exact fee for your course, visit our course pages and view the fees option.

We review tuition fees each year, and fees will rise during your course, at least in line with inflation.

Tuition fee assessment

To help us assess what you should pay, we may ask you to complete a tuition fee assessment form.

You can find information about how we determine your fee status at the UK Council for International Student Affairs.

Tuition fee deposit

As an international student, you must make a pre-payment deposit of £3,500 to Edinburgh Napier University to secure your place on your course.

This payment should be made once you are holding an unconditional, firm offer of admission.

This deposit is only refundable in the event that you are unable to secure a student visa for study with us, or if you change your mind within 14 days of making your deposit payment.

We must receive this payment before your final Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) can be issued. Once we receive your deposit payment, we will send your CAS which you will use for your Tier 4 Visa application.

You may be exempt from paying the tuition fee deposit if you are using government loans or are being sponsored to study. Contact the International Team for more details.

Paying your fees

How to pay

If you're paying your own fees, or being funded by a sponsor, you will pay your fees directly to the University.

Option 1: payment in full

If you are studying 40 credits or less per trimester then payment must be made in full.

We accept payment by cash, cheque, direct fund transfer, and by credit or debit card (we accept Visa, Visa debit, Visa electron and Mastercard) on our ePay secure payment site. We also have a range of options available to those who would like to pay in their own currency.

Please ensure payment is made before matriculation.

By post: Send your cheque, in pounds sterling, made payable to "Edinburgh Napier University" with your matriculation number clearly printed on the back to:

Option 2: set up a payment plan

You can set up a payment plan prior to or at matriculation using our secure ePay site.
Payment plan options for students starting in September are:

  • 50% in October and the balance in January
  • three payments in October, January and March
  • six monthly payments from October until March

Payment plan options for students starting in January are:

  • 50% in February and the balance in May
  • three payments in February, May and July
  • six monthly payments from February until July

Option 3: nominate a sponsor to pay your fees

If your fees are being paid for you by a sponsor (including a government award body) you must provide evidence of sponsorship or award at matriculation so that an invoice can be issued to the named person or organisation.

If you are being sponsored for more than one academic year this information will need to be updated at the start of each new academic year.

If your sponsor withdraws financial support or fails to pay all or any part of your fees you remain liable and will have to pay any amount outstanding to the University.

Part-time or distance learning courses

These courses are billed by the module, and therefore you will be invoiced per trimester. You can pay in full each trimester, or by payment plan if you are studying more than 40 credits per trimester.
You can set up a payment plan prior to or at matriculation using our secure ePay site or by calling Finance on +44 (0)131 455 6120.

Scholarships

You may be available to get some help with the cost of studying here by applying to one of our scholarships.

Living costs

You'll need enough money to pay for your fees and living costs while studying in Edinburgh.

The living costs requirement for international students is set by UK Visas and Immigration. For Edinburgh it's £1,020 per month.

Visit our international students section for more information on visas and immigration.

Living costs will vary depending on individual budgets and lifestyles. We recommend you try and create a monthly budget to keep track of your spending.

The Napier Students' Association has produced a handy Student Survival Guide which includes a breakdown of prices to show an example of monthly budgeting.

Students will often take on part-time work opportunities to support their studies and lifestyle. You can find out more information about such opportunities via our careers team and the number of hours you are permitted to work as a Tier 4 visa student from the UK Council for International Student Affairs.
