Erasmus and Turing

On December 24^th 2020, the UK Government announced that as an outcome of Brexit negotiations, the United Kingdom would not be seeking to participate in the Erasmus+ successor programme. Edinburgh Napier University will continue to actively engage with Erasmus+ through to the conclusion of its current project which is expected to support both incoming and outgoing student and staff mobility for academic year 2021/22.

In 2021/22, Edinburgh Napier University intends to continue to send and receive students and staff under the Erasmus+ framework, whilst concurrently aiming to offer grants to Edinburgh Napier students undertaking qualifying mobilities beyond the EU under the Turing scheme. The breadth of financial support available under Turing will not be confirmed until the Summer of 2021 when Turing application outcomes are expected.

From 2022/23 it is expected that Edinburgh Napier will no longer operate under the Erasmus+ scheme and will therefore be working with existing and new partners on the arrangements for a smooth transition to new partnership arrangements and opportunities in the coming year.

It should be noted that the Turing Scheme will not provide grants for staff mobility or Visiting (incoming) students, however it is likely that the Turing Scheme will offer broader flexibility for Edinburgh Napier students seeking funding to undertake international opportunities around the world, from 1-12 months.

Erasmus+

Exchanges within Europe are usually organised by the Erasmus+ programme, the European Commission's flagship educational programme for Higher Education. Please see our Erasmus+ Charter 2014-2020 and our Erasmus+ Policy Statement.

The Erasmus+ exchange programme gives students the opportunity to study or work in another European country. The programme counts towards your degree and will add an international dimension to your studies. The Erasmus+ programme will run as normal in the 2021/22 academic year.

Overseas exchange programmes

We have direct exchange links all around the world including Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand and the USA, and also work in partnership with International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), which is an organisation that arranges placements for students beyond Edinburgh Napier University’s direct exchange partner institutions.

Short-term exchange opportunities

Short-term exchange opportunities are available in the summer, giving students an opportunity to explore different cultures outside term time.

Volunteer or work abroad

Volunteering or working abroad can be a rewarding, challenging and exciting experience. We encourage our students to use their skills and their time to make a difference while at Edinburgh Napier.

Visiting exchange students

If you’re currently studying outside the UK you can join over 650 international visiting students from Europe, the USA and beyond by spending a trimester or a year with us as part of your degree, giving you a global perspective on your studies as you experience life in an exciting, historic and cultured capital city.

Edinburgh Napier students going on exchange in Europe in Academic Year 2021/22

The UK left the EU on the 31^st December 2020. As part of the transitional arrangements, UK membership in the Erasmus+ programme will be retained for all existing Erasmus+ projects until the end of the EU funding cycle (end of 2020/21 academic year). For Edinburgh Napier University, this means that Erasmus+ exchanges planned for the 2021/22 academic year will operate as normal.

Whilst Erasmus+ activity will continue to be supported in 2021/22, due to the UKs departure from the EU, students should be aware that there are changes to healthcare and visa requirements for exchanges to the EU.
