Professor Gallagher’s clinical and academic career focuses on understanding and supporting patients who have cardiovascular disease throughout their recovery,
encouraging and enabling good self-management and reducing their risk of future cardiovascular events through secondary prevention. Her research aims to help patients to recover and lead healthier lives after admission to hospital for heart problems such as heart attack, cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure.
Professor Gallagher’s work helps patients to reduce their risk of having further heart events, through cardiac rehabilitation, exercise and physical activity, medications, and weight management. Her research specifically addresses the factors that influence patients’ ability to self-manage, including cognition and health literacy and the difficulties patients face in coming to terms with having heart disease and the changes they need to make.
