make a difference

We help develop new technology that creates new jobs, improves the way we live and provides support for the economy.

At Edinburgh Napier we have strong industry links and work closely with working professionals who give regular guest lectures on live projects. This provides you with a professional insight of what industry requires, and through this connection many students have secured employment after graduation.

First year visit to The National Mining Museum

Ever wondered how your degree could start at Edinburgh Napier?

Our first year engineering students visited the National Mining Museum of Scotland to learn first-hand about how past engineering methods have worked in practice, whilst also discovering the human element that has helped to drive it forward. In this video, we tour the museum with our students and staff, who give us a unique insight into their day beyond the classroom and how it has impacted their student journey so far.

“The trip gave me a lot of insight into what you, as an engineer, could be doing to help shape industries and people's lives. This appeals to me and keeps me motivated.” - Patrick Horne, Electronic & Electrical Engineering student.

From cycle paths to seismic maths

Scotland may not be a hotbed of seismic activity but Edinburgh Napier is at the epicentre of innovative research that could save lives in earthquake-affected parts of the world. And it all started with cycle paths.

Dr John McDougall and PhD student Juan Bernal-Sanchez together with geotechnical engineering colleagues believe they are developing a novel way of installing a shredded rubber and sand mixture that will allow existing structures to be protected.

    Databike: good and bad vibrations

Edinburgh Napier researcher Dr Mark Taylor is using his self-engineered Databike to highlight poor bike paths that could be putting cyclists’ health at risk in field.

Databike is a standard bike fitted with an HD camera, a number of sensors and a small Raspberry Pi computer that allows him to measure the levels of vibration on cycling surfaces around Edinburgh. Preliminary results have suggested that cycle path surfaces could be improved and contribute to reduced vibration exposure.
