Overview

Governance is concerned with how leaders manage their stakeholder relationships to achieve economic goals, as well as social and environmental objectives in a range of boards in the private, public and voluntary sectors. Transparent and effective governance is critical to the success of any organisation, especially in light of recent renowned corporate scandals. Effective leaders in board governance must demonstrate responsible and ethical behaviour, which meets the needs of shareholders, other stakeholders and wider society.    

This Leadership in Board Governance (LiGB) CPD opportunity will equip you with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitude and support to ensure you are ‘board ready’ and assist you to pursue and attain a board-level appointment. You'll gain a critical understanding of the nature and importance of governance, ethics, benefits of a diverse board, finance, the role and contribution of board members and awareness of practices that can be adopted to achieve more effective governance in an international context. You'll benefit from continual interaction with leaders in board governance from private, public and third sectors for the duration of the course. Extensive support will be provided to take you from knowing to doing and support in sourcing and applying for suitable board-level positions. 

The course itself blends the latest academic theory from a range of subject experts with practical application. Including peer mentoring and support and participation in Dilemma - an innovative and stimulating real-world board experience.

Course details

This learning experience will be of value to anyone who aspires to be a leader in board governance. Participants will be able to clearly differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive international marketplace as confident, experienced leaders in board governance, bringing to any organisation a highly valued skillset, blending cutting-edge academic theory with practical application.  

This is open to individuals who wish to build a strong track record in leadership and a demonstrable ambition, commitment and passion for developing themselves and in pursuing a suitable board-level opportunity. You should preferably hold an Honours degree and/or have several years of work experience, although other qualifications/experience will be considered on an individual basis.

On successful completion of this course, including assessment on a group presentation and individual Portfolio of Practice, you'll gain a Certificate of Credit with 20 credits at Postgraduate Level. You will also be eligible for one year free ‘Affiliate Member’ membership of the Association of Corporate Governance Practitioners (ACGP), where further professional development opportunities may be gained to achieve higher grades of professional recognition (i.e. Associate, Full and Fellow).   

At the end of LiBG you will be able to use your portfolio to demonstrate your enhanced competencies in terms of the knowledge, skills and mind-set to perform effectively as a board member.

Autumn 2018 course starts in October with workshops on 19 October, 16 and 30 November and 14 December.

Delivery will be at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart Campus in Edinburgh.
Cost £1,500 (includes 4 days tuition, course materials and catering). 

  • calendar How you’ll be taught

    The learning experience consists of four one day workshops and access to the Governance Leaders online learning material. You will follow a study guide that will lead you through each of the topics, reading of core academic theory and concepts and a mix of reflective exercises, case-studies and self-reflection exercises (with diagnostic feedback). The delivery schedule will provide an opportunity to complete and reflect on learning activities that can be completed prior to attending each workshop, follow up activities and support. In the workshops considerable time will be devoted to group discussion and scenario-based role play of a typical board situation.  

Craiglockhart Campus

Home to the Business School, Craiglockhart campus blends the old and the new. Set within attractive grounds overlooking Edinburgh, facilities include 200- and 400-seat lecture theatres and language and multimedia labs. It's also home to our innovation and enterprise centre.
