Music Tech Academy

A Music Tech School from the #2 UK modern university for Music.
(The Guardian University Guide 2023)

A student in the music department at Edinburgh Napier University

Aimed at music students aged 14-17, our highly practical courses focus on creating and producing music while also teaching valuable technical skills in the use of music software. These courses explore music production, recording and music software through a series of project-based learning tasks. Students learn how to use GarageBand, Logic Pro and Ableton Live – industry-standard software applications – to create their own original tracks and remixes. The projects explored are adaptable to almost any music software and support can be provided for learners who wish to use their own software at home between classes.

Each course runs for 10 weeks at Edinburgh Napier University’s Merchiston campus and explores a different industry-standard software application. The courses are taught using a flipped classroom methodology, where learners engage with preparative online activities and then consolidate their learning through completing the project tasks in class. A Moodle Community virtual learning environment supports students’ learning through interaction with tutors, participants and online resources, and through sharing their own work and critiquing the work of others.

Our courses have been created to complement SQA Music Technology qualifications in secondary school, whilst providing additional depth and context to learning in this area.

How you'll be taught

Each week, you’ll receive access to a series of online preparatory materials to introduce projects and music production concepts. There will be a two-hour class on Saturdays in the music department at Edinburgh Napier University’s Merchiston Campus, where the preparatory materials will be contextualised and you will be given time to collaborate and share your work. Following these classes, you will be required to consolidate your learning by sharing your work online for feedback from tutors and peers.

James Sanderson“I would definitely recommend this course to others. It has enabled me to develop my skill level in the use of different DAW software and to be able to confidently edit and mix music. In addition, the projects have provided me with skills and ideas to use in my National 5 and Higher Music Technology studies.”
