Biography

Dr Amy Poole (BSc Hons, PhD, FHEA) is a research-active lecturer in Biomedicine within the School of Applied Sciences.

Research interests:
After completing her undergraduate degree in Applied Biology (specialising in Microbiology), Dr Amy Poole worked for an Agricultural company involved in efficacy and toxicity testing of pesticides. She then joined Professor Mark Darlison in the Signal Transduction laboratory at Nottingham Trent University where she undertook a PhD, in part collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute for Ornithology, Germany investigating the molecular signalling cascades involved in learning and memory in Zebra finch.

After securing a lectureship at Edinburgh Napier University in 2012, Dr Amy Poole established a programme of research investigating the molecular mechanisms of disease, including exploration of the role chloride co-transporters in hypoxia and stroke and the role of hASH1 and exosome signalling in driving neuroendocrine prostate cancer. Dr Poole has a number of successful PhD and MRes completions.
Dr Amy Poole lends her molecular biology expertise to internal and external research collaborations on projects including ‘Evaluating the effects of air pollution-derived toxic nanoparticles on astrocyte reactivity and neurodegeneration’, use of pro-drugs in cancer and ‘Investigating the sex-specific legacy of excessive fetal androgen exposure on immune function’.

Teaching and Leadership:
Following completion of her PhD, Amy began work at Edinburgh Napier University as an online lecturer, which quickly evolved into a permanent position where her current teaching is informed by her area of expertise (molecular biology), which she teaches at UG and PG level, both on home, and transnational education (TNE) programmes in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Singapore.
Since 2016, Dr Poole is the year 3 and 4 leader UG Biomedical Science, Applied Microbiology and Biological Sciences programmes. During the pandemic, she took over as interim Programme leader of all five UG Bioscience programmes. Dr Poole is a longstanding member of the school Quality committee (since 2014), the school LTA committee (2014-21) and was part of the Digital Skills Partnership (2021), informing University guidelines for online learning.

Dr Poole is passionate about integrating skills into her teaching and developing innovative digital resources to enrich and enhance student learning. Including, projects around immersive learning using 360 technology and designing self-directed, interactive bioinformatics packages, now available as a CPD. Her work with Virtual Reality has been showcased internally and externally through public engagement events
