Dr Katrina Burton

Lecturer

Biography

Katrina’s first compositional studies were taken at the University of Glasgow. She then completed an MMus and PhD (in composition) at the University of Edinburgh; both degrees funded by the AHRC. During her PhD studies she was awarded a number of scholarships that enabled her to undertake research in New York, resulting in a large-scale orchestral work influenced by the architecture of the Chrysler Building. Katrina was appointed Lecturer in Music at Edinburgh Napier University in 2007 and is currently Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Music degree.

Katrina’s music is informed by a variety of artistic disciplines: painting, sculpture, photography, architecture and dance. Her work has been performed by the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, NYOS: Futures, the Concorde Ensemble, the Research Ensemble and the Edinburgh Quartet with performances in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Malta, Australia, South Korea and the US.

Katrina’s most recent research seeks to explore the relationship between music and architecture, drawing comparisons between the materiality of music and the materiality of architecture. Her site-specific compositions have been performed at Open House Chicago, Barcelona Architecture Week and Edinburgh Doors open Day. She writes and presents on her research to both music and architecture based audiences.

She is the recipient of two Edinburgh Napier Students’ Association Excellence Awards and is a Fellow of the HEA.
