Biography

I am a visual artist, my early work established me at the forefront of artists working in the medium of constructed photography. I was a student at Napier College in the 80s, and I have taught in Prison education, further education and higher education. I joined Edinburgh Napier University 4years ago.
I have lectured and given workshops worldwide including Tate Gallery Liverpool, University of Plastic Arts Barcelona, Art Institute San Francisco, Barbican Art Centre London, School of Art Kingston Jamaica, Glasgow School of Art, California State University Los Angeles. Expo Exhibition Thessaloniki Greece, Edinburgh College of Art.
For almost 40 years I have devised working methods in Constructed Photography.
My work has been included in exhibitions worldwide, including the widely regarded seminal exhibition the Vigorous Imagination, at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art 1987. Simon Groom, director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, said: “Scotland has produced a great many artists of international significance in the last 30-40 years, and the Vigorous Imagination exhibition held at the National Galleries of Scotland marked a very important moment in the history of Scottish Art.
I am the recipient of a Leverhulme Trust Research grant for photography, making large scale installations in museums and gallery’s worldwide, Including, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Centro de la Imagen Mexico City, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography Montreal, California State University Los Angeles Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem, Walker Arts Centre Minneapolis.
Research Project Award, Scottish Arts Council Award, Arts and Humanities Research Council Award, Creative Scotland Award. My work has been collected by museums worldwide and acquired for the nation, including Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, Musee National dArt Modern Centre George Pompidou Paris, Kelvingrove Museum and Art Galleries Glasgow.
