Biography

My focus as an academic and practitioner is the development of talent and understanding the personal and environmental characteristics that enable people to fulfil their potential, develop effectively and achieve success. In line with this, I have developed the Talent Development Environment Questionnaire (Martindale et al., 2010) which has impacted research globally to assess the quality of development environments and guide evidence based practice.

Much of my work has involved the impact evaluation of a range of psycho-social interventions on the health, wellbeing and success of young people and adults, including those in sport, educational contexts and those who are socially excluded or have complex needs. For example, funded research projects have included the evaluation and design of:

• Elite sport academy programmes and structures
• Sport coach education and development
• School based talent identification and development programmes:
• School based physical activity promotion programmes;
• Impact of expeditions on positive adjustment of young people
• Impact of outdoor adventure experiences of school pupil learning, resilience and success
• Impact of youth cadet organisations on young people’s development
• Resilience and support requirements of military families who are geographically dispersed
• Resilience and support requirements of military families living on isolated bases
• Understanding the lived experience of military personnel
• Understanding resilience through the transition experience of military veterans

I am also a chartered sport and exercise psychologist and have worked with a variety of elite and development level performers, coaches and sports. I have experience working as a team psychologist (triathlon) through the Commonwealth Games 2002, London Olympics 2012 and Rio Olympics 2016 cycles, which has enabled me to apply evidence based talent development environment principles at the ‘coal face’. I have applied these same principles to the higher education context, helping staff and postgraduate research students to fulfil their potential through mentoring and communities of practice.

  • Expert Opinion for Graded Recommendations: Arsenal FC: I am regularly used as an expert to provide advice to Arsenal FC about the rigorous nature of external research bids that they receive.
  • Expert Contributor & Steering Group Member: UK Coaching Landmark National Project 'Principles of Talent Development': I was invited by UK Coaching as an expert contributor to their landmark national project within coaching: ‘Principles of Talent Development’ designed to inform a suite of resources to support coaches which can be used by stakeholders throughout talent and performance pathways across the UK (2018). Subsequently I have been invited onto a steering group and have been asked to help them utilise my TDEQ (research tool) to drive evaluation and development of evidence based practice across a variety of UK sport pathways.
  • Sports Coach UK: Invited to Sports Coach UK Research Hub for Talent: Sports Coach UK invited experts to join a research hub as a means to generate ideas to take forward for the development of Sports Coaching within the UK.
  • Melting Pot Discussion for Talent Initiative - Sports Coach UK: Sports Coach UK are hosting a ‘melting pot’ discussion for Talent, a new initiative they are driving. The ‘Talent research’ meeting aims to gather insight and promote discussion amongst some leading researchers in the topic of talent and talent coaching to discuss the current thinking in the area of talent development, and the next steps in talent. Given my work in recent years, they have invited me to join the discussion
  • Founding Member of Arsenal FC Psychology Research Group: I was invited to be part of development of the Arsenal FC Psychology Research Group, which aims to actively collaborate to identify and carry out research with direct applied impact on Arsenal FC
  • Talent Development Environments. UKSport - TID Melting Pot, National Strategy, Leeds: UKSport invited experts to take part on a 'melting pot' discussion day with the aim of developing evidence based guidance for their policy development within talent development in sport.

Invited Speaker

  • Veterans in Custody Stakeholder Event: 24th January 12:00-15:30 Craiglockhart Campus, Edinburgh. During this event research findings were presented from our qualitative study of ex-military personnel in custody, as well as showcasing other military research from Edinburgh Napier. There was discussion of key issues for justice involved veterans including identity, transitions and support with a view to identifying priorities for research and practice.
  • High Performance Symposium: Talent Development Environments UKSport/Sportscotland institute of sport. During this event I was invited to speak about my work in measuring the processes of effective Talent Development Environments to high performance staff and coaches across the UK. I outlined how to use my TDEQ questionnaire to gain formative feedback, design interventions and measure impact in high performance environments
  • Maximising Premiership Football Academy Experiences: Arsenal FC. I was invited to present our work with Arsenal FC academy aimed at impacting process and policy at the club to the wider Arsenal FC club staff and management..
  • Arsenal FC Psychology Working Group: I was invited as a founding member of the group to present practical ideas for research projects that would impact positively on Arsenal FC performance and development
