Dr Sandra Cairncross has been Assistant Principal (Widening Participation & Community) since January 2018. Prior to that, she was Assistant Principal Student Experience (Feb 2015 to Dec 2017) and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Creative Industries (April 2008 – Jul 2015) at Edinburgh Napier University.
Prior to appointment as Dean, she held leadership roles at faculty and school level. These included Associate Dean with responsibilities for academic quality and student experience, School of Computing Director of Student Experience, and programme directorships.
Sandra studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Strathclyde and is Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Sandra was assessed as being dyslexic in 2008
Sandra is a proud Corporate Parent and convenes the HUB for SUCCESS (helping those with care experience to get in, stay in or return to education) and is also a member of the Care Review Edges of Care Journey Group.
Sandra chairs the Advisory Board for Equate Scotland, who focus on making a positive difference to women in science, engineering and technology and is a member of Making Maths Count, a Scottish Government initiative aimed at increasing enthusiasm for and attainment in Maths.
Sandra is Edinburgh Napier's Athena SWAN Champion, Aurora Champion and sponsors the Women’s Network.
She is a member of the University’s Senior Leadership Team and Academic Board.
