Time to get help? Acute myocardial infarction and delay in calling an ambulance.
Acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) are experienced by approximately 50,000 Australians annually and are one of the most common causes of Emergency Department presentations in developed countries worldwide. If symptoms are acted on promptly, and presentation to hospital for treatment occurs within one to two hours of the onset of symptoms, death and long term morbidity is dramatically reduced. Unfortunately, many individuals fail to recognise the significance of their symptoms and there is often a delay before an ambulance is called (the appropriate course of action).
