Innovative Fibre Optic Lightsource for Illuminated Digital Textiles in Performance

  Over the last two and a half years there has been considerable investment to develop the capacity for smart textile production as a light-emitting woven optical fibre lace fabric, and as an integrated textile and lighting modular system for architecture.

As identified during the previous project, and in order to allow diversify and maintain continued product refinement, we aim to achieve an advanced, proof of concept light source which will provide improved lighting capability appropriate for illuminating woven optical fibre responsive backdrops. There is a critical need to progress advanced light source capability for the product to be a commercial reality. The follow-on funding will allow us to invest time, resources and expertise to maximise the potential of this unique product.

Alongside continued involvement from our industry stakeholders, we aim to attract new theatre/performance professionals, such as choreographers, theatre designers and lighting designers to progress market and product innovation. Building on an existing knowledge base and background IP, the University will test lighting components and work with MYB Textiles on fundamental design specs and fabric lighting requirements. Specialist light tests and measurements will be carried out, methods devised for fibre and light integration and light source components will be developed.
