10.’95. - 7.’96
. Part-time lecturer in sports science at the University of Wolverhampton, Division of Sport and Performance.

10.’96. – 6.’98. Full-time lecturer in sport science at the University of Wolverhampton, School of Sport Performing Arts and Leisure.

7.’98 – 8.’00. Full-time senior lecturer in sport science at the University of Wolverhampton, School of Sport Performing Arts and Leisure.

09.2000–02.2007. Full-time lecturer in sport and exercise science at Napier University Edinburgh, School of Life Sciences.

10.03.2007 –31.07.2010. Full-time senior lecturer and Subject Group Leader in sport and exercise science at Edinburgh Napier University, School of Life Sciences.

In this role I had management responsibilities for the Sport and Exercise Science group, which numbered 12 academic staff and 5 technicians. Within this role I managed workloads, the Professional Development Reviews of the Group, holidays, absences and academic developments within this cognate area. Out with of the Group I had (and still have) School management responsibility for the part-time and demonstrator budget and manage all staffing and human resource issues within the school, from recruitment to mentoring of staff through to disciplinary procedures.

1.08.2010-Present. (SLSS). With the formation of the new School of Life Sport and Social Sciences I was appointed as the School Research Co-ordinator, with a remit of taking the Biomedicine and Sport and Exercise Science Research Forward to the next Research Excellence Framework exercise. I am a member of the School Management Team and the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee.

Research Interests

I completed a collaborative research project with the Olympic Medical Institute, who initially commissioned a literature review on the impact of pollution on athletic performance, with regards to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games (Florida-James et al. 2004). We also completed a study investigating the effect of ozone on athletic performance and obtained £12,000 of funding in total. Work in this area  continued, looking at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, with a collaborative PhD student project with the OMI and UK Sport. This student completed her studies in November 2009. I am currently supervising one part-time PhD student investigating immunological and circadian responses to ultra endurance events, and 4 MSc by Research students in various sport and health related areas. I have supervised a total of 4 PhD students to successful completion of their studies- two in the area of exercise immunology and cell senescence.

Other relevant work information

I have been external examiner at the University of Wales (NEWI), Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College and also the University of West of Scotland for their respective undergraduate sports programmes. I sat on the validation panel for the MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences at Edgehill College in April 2006.  I am a member the HEA and I act as a reviewer for the Journal of Sport Sciences, the International SportMed Journal, Medical Science Monitor and European Journal of Sports Science. In the past I have completed coaching/teaching qualifications in rugby union, soccer, swimming, squash, orienteering, tennis and Gaelic football. I provided sports science support (exercise physiology) to both the first team and the youth team at Walsall Football Club (98-’00). I was the conditioning coach for the men’s soccer club at the University of Wolverhampton and have provided sports science support (exercise physiology and strength and conditioning) to two U23 Scottish International rowers. I have also trained 3 male elite World Cup downhill mountain bikers and continue to train one Scottish female elite Word Cup cross country mountain biker. I currently provide Sports Science Support to the Scottish Downhill Mountainbike Team working closely with the Scottish Downhill Coach.

General information

I compete in off road and adventure type events. I have been Irish Orienteering Champion at various age levels, also competing internationally for Ireland in the past. I won the Tough Guy Challenge in 2001 and I was a member of the team that won the Scottish Islands Peaks Race in 2003. I am a member of Carnethy Hill Racing Club and have representated Northen Ireland on the hills at both home international and World levels. I am also a keen mountain biker and compete in cross-country races and ultra endurance bike races (10-24hs). I have represented Limavady first XV at standoff in my youth.
