A university with passion and drive

Named after mathematician John Napier, the inventor of the decimal point and logarithms in the 1500s, we have proudly gone from Napier Technical College to Edinburgh Napier University. We continue to grow today and have exciting plans for the future.

Strategy 2020: Building Success

Our Strategy is for today, tomorrow and beyond. It features four main pillars related to academic reputation, innovation, enterprise and citizenship, an excellent personalised student experience and internationalising our work.

Our values

We are a professional, ambitious, innovative and inclusive university. We create knowledge and nurture talent, ensuring that we can transform both people and communities today, and tomorrow.

Our academic reputation

Growing our academic reputation is at the heart of Strategy 2020. To achieve this, we have set a range of goals and key performance indicators around our teaching, our reputation and our student numbers. We will operate at the leading edge of academic disciplines, increase our reputation for outstanding teaching and grow our research profile.

We're number 1 for nurturing student talent

The Guardian University Guide 2017, which compares entry requirements with final degree awards, ranks us top in the UK for adding value to students.

Internationalising our work

In Strategy 2020, we aim to build on this reputation.

We are internationally recognised

In the recent QS Stars international university rankings, the quality of our teaching, internationalisation and employability were all officially recognised, with the University scoring five stars in each category.

Our student body in Edinburgh and overseas is a diverse population with more than 19,500 students connecting with peers from over 130 countries.

Edinburgh Napier has:

Excellent personalised student experience

Students are at the heart of what we do. All students will have the opportunity for international, social, sporting, volunteering and cultural involvement, as well as relevant work-related experience.

Work-related learning

We develop and nurture excellent relationships with industry and this goes beyond simply accreditation. Work-related learning, including internships, work shadowing and live industry projects, are beneficial to both industry and our students.

Completing a placement as part of my degree gave me the best of both worlds: the academic knowledge and the practical experience.
