Hyperheuristics for infrastructure system optimisation
Continuum Industries novel software tech allows engineers to automate their work and evaluate millions of possible combinations of design parameters. Primary application lies in linear infrastructure design - roads, railways, pipelines, cables. Whereas the core of each infrastructure type is similar, the context within which a given project is set might differ widely: on land, at sea, in flat terrain, hilly terrain, sparsely or densely populated areas. As a result, the company is facing a challenge in ensuring that software tech performance is robust when dealing with a variety of problems. One approach to solving this problem is to use hyperheuristics - an approach that will help the algorithms automatically adjust their settings when dealing with a new problem. In this project, Edinburgh Napier University will provide their expertise and help the company understand if hyperheuristics can feasibly address the problem.
