Ingrid's student experience

Ingrid from Norway talks about her life at Edinburgh Napier University

Ingrid Thornes, MSC International Business Management

“I contacted a former student who convinced me to take the chance”

International Business Management at Edinburgh Napier University is a very interesting course that I highly recommend. It gave me many new perspectives that I have never considered before which will also be relevant in relation to job opportunities later in my career. Edinburgh Napier was an easy choice for me as it has a great reputation and it was easy for me to contact the University with questions I had about my studies.

I contacted a former student who was really helpful and convinced me to take the chance as I have always been interested in how companies and education operate outside of Norway. I had also never studied in English before I came to Scotland so I was a bit nervous about how it would be to study in academic English at postgraduate level, but it turned out the be okay.

“By searching on Facebook and the University's groups, I came got in touch with other international students”

My favourite part of the University is the friendly and informative staff, in addition to the useful tutorials which help us students reflect on the theory we have learned in lectures. One of the campuses is open 24 hours a day which is very useful in periods close to submissions and exams. The University offers great academic writing and presentation support courses which are very useful for international students.

The Edinburgh Napier Students’ Association have a number of clubs and societies you can sign up for and they are a great way of socialising. They include everything from team sports to dancing. Social media is also a great way to chat with others before coming to Edinburgh. By searching on Facebook and the University's social groups, I came got in touch with other international students.

“Edinburgh has a lot to offer - beautiful buildings and museums, charming Scottish pubs and coffee shops”

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to with the friendliest population. I fell in love with the city the moment I came here for the first time. I was lucky to find a place to live within a week but as approximately 10% of the population are students, my advice is to find accommodation before arriving.

Edinburgh is built around the famous castle and has a lot to offer - beautiful buildings and museums, charming Scottish pubs and coffee shops. And the majority of them offer student discounts! It’s packed with shopping possibilities with student friendly prices such as Poundland and Primark.

The winter season with the Christmas Markets will give you the "Christmas spirit" around the holidays. It’s a central city with reasonable prices on train tickets and bus tours to explore what the United Kingdom has to offer. Scotland has a beautiful landscape and that is part of the reason why I chose Edinburgh Napier.

“I want to communicate and negotiate with people all over the world”

My long term career goals are not clear yet as there are many possibilities with my course. I always wanted to work in an international company where I would have the opportunity to communicate and negotiate with people all over the world.
