Overview

On the BSc Honours Quantity Surveying programme students are taught by Chartered Surveyors who have extensive professional practice experience. 

The course will allow you to learn the skills involved in design economics, procurement methods, cost planning and estimating, life cycle costing, measurement and quantification of construction work and contract management.

We have regular guest lectures from industry experts who talk about working examples of their projects, which will give you a real feel of how industry works. These strong links have resulted in students being in high demand from industry before they even graduate.

After graduating, you can find yourself managing the finances and contracts of high-profile construction projects worldwide.

Quantity Surveyors are widely employed throughout the construction and property industries including QS consultancies, construction companies, specialist sub-contractors, local authorities, specialist tax consultants and housebuilding companies.

Course details

In the first year, you will learn from a broad range of topics to give you a feel for Surveying as a profession including introductions to Construction Costs and Measurement, Building Design and Technology, Property Value Studies and Property and Construction Law.

You will then progress on to more specialist subjects including Construction Financial Management, Construction Project Management and Construction Contracts and further develop your skills in Cost Planning and Estimating, Measurement and Quantification of Construction and Engineering Works, Contractor’s Estimating and Building Design and Technology

In your final two years you will work on your Honours project as well as gaining enhanced skills in areas of presenting, negotiating, soft skills, Commercial Management and Conservation Surveying to prepare you for your full-time role in the construction industry.

    How you’ll be taught

    Classes are presented using a blend of face-to-face teaching and online resources through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment.  The practical application of knowledge is the foundation for the QS course where we recreate real-life scenarios and learn how to deal with them in a classroom environment.

    Assessments

    No exams for all level 7 modules in the first 18 months of the programme.

    Assignments comprise mainly scenario-based activities emphasizing the applied knowledge approach and employing an active learning ethos.

    Work placement

    Students will utilise their current employment related to their part-time surveying studies by undertaking the work placement module in Trimester 3 of years 4 and 5.

Entry requirements

What are the entry requirements for Quantity Surveying?

Our entry requirements indicate both Standard and Minimum qualifications with which we normally accept students. Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications.

This course is only available for entry into Years 1 and 2.

The University does not sponsor students to study on part-time programmes in the UK under the Student Visa route. International Applicants must therefore have other valid immigration leave to study on this programme.

Can you go straight into second year of university?

Advanced entry into Year 2 of this course is possible for students with suitable qualifications. See the individual year tabs for more information.

Standard Entry Requirement: BBBC. National 5 C in Maths (Applications of Maths is acceptedand English.

  • CCC
  • GCSE Grade C/4 in Maths and English.

Irish Leaving Certificate

  • Grades H3, H3, H3, H3 at Higher Level.
  • Grade O4 at Ordinary Level in Maths and English also required.

BTEC (QCF) Extended Diploma Level 3

  • Minimum grades MMM (Merit, Merit, Merit) in a related subject.
  • GCSE Grade C/4 in Maths and English.

BTEC (QCF) National Diploma Level 3

  • Minimum grades DD (Distinction, Distinction) in a related subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

  • Award of Diploma with 26 points overall with three HL subjects at grades 5, 5, 5.

If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply.

Get ahead

Quantity surveying is a well-paid and valuable professional career route. If you are at school and enjoy subjects such as Computing, Maths, Geography, Graphic Communication and English then you are already on the right path to becoming a surveyor.

You may also want to consider doing subjects such as Physics and Design Technology as these will teach you valuable skills that will help you during your studies.

Coming from college?

Edinburgh Napier University has articulation agreements with many partner colleges so if you are already studying surveying at college you could gain advanced entry into second year and continue your studies towards your honours degree in Quantity Surveying.
