English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will need to provide evidence of your English language abilities.

Minimum English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will normally need to undertake an approved English language test to show that you have the correct level of English language competency.  This may not apply if you have completed all your school qualifications in English, or your undergraduate degree was taught and examined in English (within two years of starting your course).  Check our international country pages to find out if this applies to you.

We accept the following English language tests for entry purposes. The levels stated below are the minimum requirements – some degree programmes may require a higher level of English language.  Please check the course listings for further information.

If you hold an English language test which is not listed below, please contact either the Undergraduate or Postgraduate admissions teams for further advice.

All English language tests need to have been taken within two years of your course start date, to ensure your language skills are up to date.

Pre-sessional English language (EFL) courses

The UKVI regulations state that any student who has an English Language level of B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and wishes to study in the UK must have undertaken a UKVI approved language test, in order to meet the Tier 4 visa requirements.

This means if you are coming to study a pre-sessional English language course before your degree studies, and you require a Tier 4 visa in order to study in the UK, you will need to undertake an English Language Test which has been approved by the UK Visa and Immigration Service (UKVI) and taken at a UKVI-approved test centre.

Currently there are two tests which are approved for Tier 4 purposes:

  • IELTS
  • Trinity Integrated Skills in English
