The Environmental Sustainability Strategy Board of Governance (ESSBG) leads and supports all work focused on achieving our University Strategy and Environmental Sustainability Strategy commitments.
The ESSBG is chaired by Professor Gary Hutchiston, Vice Principal for Regional Innovation and External Engagement. Prof Hutchison is a University Leadership Team and University Court member.
All current ESSBG members are listed within the terms of reference noted below. Membership includes the Edinburgh Napier Students’ Association President as well as colleagues from schools and services throughout the University.

Monthly ESSBG workstream meetings are held to ensure continual progress towards all environmental sustainability commitments at Edinburgh Napier.

Quarterly ESSBG minutes are shared with the University Leadership Team (ULT). Annual progress reports are provided to the University Court. The measurement of operational carbon emissions (tCO2e) is an internal key performance indicator at the university. Carbon data is available within the Net Zero Carbon pages.
A detailed overview of the University profile, including governance structures and principles is provided within the annual Public Bodies Climate Change Duties reports to the Scottish Government. Copies of all reports submitted between 2014/15 and 2024/25 are available within the Sustainable Scotland Network website.
The University employs an Environmental Sustainability Manager. The Manager is responsible for working with students, staff and partners to ensure all aspects of environmental sustainability, including all Environmental Sustainability Strategy commitments are actioned and achieved. ESSBG members, including a wider array of colleagues at Edinburgh Napier, represent the University through a number of external networks including Scotland Beyond Net Zero and Edinburgh Climate Compact.
